Trump’s reciprocal tariff: All you need to know with full list of targeted countries

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a sweeping new set of tariffs on Wednesday (April 2, 2025), escalating tensions with allies and adversaries alike in a bid to bolster U.S. manufacturing. Mr. Trump listed the high tariffs charged by India on American products as he announced reciprocal tariffs on countries across the board, declaring a 26% “discounted reciprocal tariff” on India.

“This is Liberation Day, a long-awaited moment. 2nd April 2025 will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to make America wealthy again. We are going to make it wealthy, good, and wealthy,” Mr. Trump said on Wednesday (April 2, 2025) in remarks from the Rose Garden at the White House as he announced the closely watched reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose levies on American goods.

As he announced the tariffs, he held up a chart that showed the tariffs that countries such as India, China, the U.K., and the European Union charge, along with the reciprocal tariffs that these countries will now have to pay.

“Discounted tariff” on India

The chart indicated that India charged 52% tariffs “including currency manipulation and trade barriers,” and America would now charge India a “discounted reciprocal tariff” of 26%.

10% baseline tariff

Earlier, a senior White House official had told reporters that the president would impose a “baseline” tariff on all imports to the U.S. That rate is set at 10% and will go into effect on April 5. Some countries will only face the base rate. These include: United Kingdom, Singapore, Chile, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Turkiye, Colombia, Argentina, El Salvador, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, among others.

‘Worst offenders’

White House officials also said that they would impose what they describe as custom reciprocal tariffs on roughly 60 of the “worst offenders”. These will go into effect on April 9. The key trading partners subject to these customised tariff rates include:

• China: 54%

• Cambodia: 49%

• Vietnam: 46%

• Sri Lanka: 44%

• Thailand: 36%

• Taiwan: 32%

• South Africa: 30%

• Japan: 24%

• European Union: 20%

• Philippines: 17%

No tariffs on specific goods

The reciprocal tariffs will not apply to specific goods such as copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, lumber, bullion, energy, and “certain minerals that are not available in the United States”, according to a White House fact sheet.

 25% tariff on automobiles

Mr. Trump also imposed 25% tariff on all foreign-made automobiles. These tariffs are set to take effect at midnight on Thursday (April 3, 2025).
